What is the EUDR about?

The EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation) aims to slow down the rapid progression of forest degradation and deforestation with new due diligence obligations for deforestation-intensive raw materials and their derived products. Every company that places, supplies or exports EUDR-relevant products on the EU market will be affected in stages. As a result, the EUDR also aims to protect biodiversity and support the fight against climate change. The EUDR applies to trade on the EU internal market, but affects forests worldwide. The Deforestation Regulation will apply to large and medium-sized enterprises from the end of 2024 and will be extended to small and micro enterprises in mid-2025.

The key points of the EUDR

The new EU regulation on deforestation requires affected companies to comply with due diligence obligations in relation to deforestation and relevant legislation for each batch of products or raw materials concerned.

Companies

The EUDR applies (in stages) to all companies that trade in raw materials or goods with a deforestation risk. The requirements for SMEs are less stringent. In addition, the obligations differ depending on the market role of your company.

Covered goods

EUDR-relevant raw materials are wood, palm oil, coffee, cocoa, cattle, soy, rubber and products derived from these raw materials. More raw materials will be added in the future. Among other things, 100% recycled products are excluded.

Criteria

The import, trade and export of affected goods are only permitted on the EU market if there is no or only a negligible risk of deforestation. Cultivation and production must be carried out in accordance with the relevant legislation of the country of origin.

Obligations

For EUDR goods, a risk assessment must be carried out and a due diligence declaration provided before they are placed on the market. There is also a documentation obligation. Non-SMEs (according to the EUDR definition) must submit an annual public EUDR report.

Implementing the EUDR with VERSO

Master the requirements of the Deforestation Regulation with an efficient software solution: The EUDR module of the VERSO Supply Chain Hub automatically guides you to EUDR compliance.

Request supplier data easily

Simply request the relevant data from your suppliers. Suppliers can provide data such as geo-information or due diligence declarations with just a few clicks – error-free thanks to automated plausibility checks. Suppliers use the Supply Chain Hub free of charge and can easily obtain data from the upstream supply chain.

Automated risk analysis

Based on the data provided, the Supply Chain Hub carries out an AI-based risk assessment of your goods. It automatically checks not only the deforestation risk of your goods, but also the legal compliance in the respective country of origin. In this way, VERSO enables you to meet all due diligence requirements.

Managing and reducing risks

If risks or specific incidents are identified, you can initiate appropriate measures such as self-disclosures or statements directly via the Supply Chain Hub and designate responsible parties. Document and track your measures and store your notes and documents flexibly.

Due diligence declaration at the touch of a button

Companies must submit a due diligence declaration for each affected batch. Create this declaration at the click of a mouse and submit it to the EU’s Deforestation Due Diligence Registry via our API. Are you a retailer? Then you can easily integrate and check the existing due diligence declarations of your suppliers.

Seamless connection for CSRD reporting

CSRD-affected companies must report annually on risk management. As a single source of truth, VERSO provides you with centralized ESG data management – including EUDR. You can seamlessly transfer or export all data relating to your EUDR due diligence obligations to the ESG Hub, VERSO’s CSRD solution.
