What is the EUDR about?

The EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation) aims to slow down the rapid progression of forest degradation and deforestation with new due diligence obligations for deforestation-intensive raw materials and their derived products. Every company that places, supplies or exports EUDR-relevant products on the EU market will be affected in stages. As a result, the EUDR also aims to protect biodiversity and support the fight against climate change. The EUDR applies to trade on the EU internal market, but affects forests worldwide. The Deforestation Regulation will apply to large and medium-sized enterprises from the end of 2024 and will be extended to small and micro enterprises in mid-2025.

The key points of the EUDR

The new EU regulation on deforestation requires affected companies to comply with due diligence obligations in relation to deforestation and relevant legislation for each batch of products or raw materials concerned.

Companies

The EUDR applies (in stages) to all companies that trade in raw materials or goods with a deforestation risk. The requirements for SMEs are less stringent. In addition, the obligations differ depending on the market role of your company.

Covered goods

EUDR-relevant raw materials are wood, palm oil, coffee, cocoa, cattle, soy, rubber and products derived from these raw materials. More raw materials will be added in the future. Among other things, 100% recycled products are excluded.

Criteria

The import, trade and export of affected goods are only permitted on the EU market if there is no or only a negligible risk of deforestation. Cultivation and production must be carried out in accordance with the relevant legislation of the country of origin.

Obligations

For EUDR goods, a risk assessment must be carried out and a due diligence declaration provided before they are placed on the market. There is also a documentation obligation. Non-SMEs (according to the EUDR definition) must submit an annual public EUDR report.
